Product Review: EVDance J1772 to Tesla Charging Adapter – Will this really help you to charge your new Model Y?

EVDance J1772 to Tesla Charging Adapter

Introduction:

In the ever-expanding world of electric vehicles, finding the right charging solution tailored to your vehicle’s needs can be a game-changer. For new Tesla owners seeking a versatile and affordable charging option, the EVDance J1772 to Tesla Charging Adapter offers a promising solution. This review delves into the features, benefits, and limitations of this adapter, highlighting its value as a home charging accessory.

For us, we have a Clipper Creek home EV charging unit already installed (Clipper Creek was recently bought by Enphase = https://enphase.com/store/ev-chargers/hcs-60-ev-charger ), since my Dad had a Chevy Volt and wanted to charge it when he came to visit. We got this home EV charger installed 6 years ago, and the charging connector is the J1772, which is what the Volt uses.

Fast forward to 2023, and we bought a 2023 Tesla Model Y. Fortunately, the Model Y came with a J1772 to Tesla Connection Adapter. The issue for us, is we wanted a second one. Why you ask? Well, we wanted one in the car in case we needed it at some other location we have driven to, and we wanted a second one to connect to our Clipper Creek home EV charging unit. That way we don’t have to dig in the car to find the adapter when we charge at home, since it is already on the changing head.

We could have just bought another one from Tesla, but it is $50 (https://shop.tesla.com/product/sae-j1772-charging-adapter), and we thought to see if we can find one for a lower price.

J1772 – Tesla Adapter Options:

If you go one Amazon you will find J1772 – Tesla Adapters ranging in price from $16 to $60. IMPORTANT NOTE: These adapters are for Type 1 or Type 2 home charging stations with a max output of less than 80 amps. These are not for use with Type 3 charging stations which are usually at pay to charge stations outside the home.

We looked at the following J1772 to Tesla Adapters (with Amazon referral links):

TOKREAL – $20 = https://amzn.to/4658vzp

EVDANCE – $25 (with Coupon is $20) = https://amzn.to/44D9k16

PALAWOLA – $60 (sometimes on sale for $47) = https://amzn.to/44I2Xd4

All of these adapters have the same basic spec as the original Tesla adapter that came with the car – rated at 240V, 80A Max, operating temperature range of -22°F to 122°F (-30°C to 50°C) and IP56 protection grade.

We didn’t consider the $16 one, since it had some negative reviews. We could find no difference between the specs of the Palawola and the Tokreal, so we ruled out the Palawola due to its high price. In the end we bought the EVDance adapter since with the coupon it cost the same as the Tokreal, but it had more reviews and they were very positive.

EVDance J1772 to Tesla Charging Adapter Features and Compatibility:

The standout feature of the EVDance J1772 to Tesla Charging Adapter is its ability to bridge the gap between Tesla’s proprietary car charging port connector and the more widely used J1772 connector. Designed specifically for Tesla Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X owners, this adapter allows you to connect your Tesla vehicle to standard J1772 charging stations, greatly expanding your charging options.

Affordability and Value:

One of the most appealing aspects of the EVDance adapter is its cost-effectiveness. Priced at half the cost of the official Tesla-branded adapter, which often retails for around $50, this alternative offers a budget-friendly option for Tesla owners looking to diversify their charging routine without breaking the bank. This price point makes it an attractive choice, particularly for those who primarily charge their vehicles at home.

Home Charging Convenience:

It’s important to note that the EVDance Tesla Charging Adapter is intended for home charging use only. This limitation aligns well with the typical charging habits of Tesla owners, who often charge their vehicles overnight in the comfort of their own garages. If you’re seeking a versatile solution for on-the-go charging, it’s worth considering alternative options. However, for those who mainly rely on home charging, the EVDANCE adapter can be an invaluable addition to your EV toolkit.

Safety and Certification:

Safety is paramount when it comes to charging electric vehicles, and the EVDance adapter doesn’t cut corners in this department. With its UL safety certification, IP56 protection rating and UL94-0V fireproof rating, you can trust that the adapter has undergone rigorous testing to ensure reliable and secure charging experiences. These certifications adds an extra layer of confidence for users who prioritize the safety of their vehicles and charging infrastructure.

Our Experience:

At the time of this writing, we have charge our Tesla Model Y with the EVDance J1772 to Tesla Charging Adapter connected to our Clipper Creek home EV charging unit about 6 times now. The charging rate was the same using the original Tesla branded J1772 to Tesla Charging Adapter or the EVDance J1772 to Tesla Charging Adapter, no performance difference was observed.

Each time the car connected to and charged without any issues. Our charger charges the car at 8kW per hour, not as fast as the Tesla wall mounted charger which charges at 11.5 kW, but fast enough to charge from 20% to 80% in slightly under 6 hours. The Adapter handled this without any problems.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, the J1772 to Tesla Charging Adapter by EVDance presents an enticing solution for Tesla Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X owners seeking a cost-effective way to enhance their home charging setup. With its seamless bridging of the J1772 and Tesla connectors, affordability compared to official alternatives, and safety certification, this adapter holds its own in the market.

While its primary focus on home charging might limit its appeal for those in need of on-the-go solutions, it excellently serves its intended purpose. If you’re a Tesla owner looking to expand your charging horizons without splurging, the EVDance J1772 to Tesla Charging Adapter could be the practical addition you’ve been searching for.
